A Playground Connects Worlds: How Volunt2Thai Brings a School Partnership Between Germany and Thailand to Life
Sometimes international friendship begins with a simple idea. Sometimes with a jar of homemade jam. And sometimes it results in a playground where children can laugh, play, and create lasting memories.
The partnership between the Gesamtschule Lengerich/Tecklenburg (GeLeTe) in Germany and Ban Nong Kung Don Daeng Primary School in rural Northeast Thailand is a powerful example of how education, cultural exchange, and community engagement can bridge continents. The partnership is supported by Volunt2Thai, a non-profit community project that has been helping local villages, schools, and disadvantaged children in Thailand for more than 13 years.
Volunt2Thai: Education and Cultural Exchange in Rural Thailand
Many families in Northeast Thailand face significant economic challenges. Parents often leave their villages for extended periods to find work in larger Thai cities or abroad. Children frequently remain in the care of grandparents or relatives, growing up with limited educational opportunities and fewer resources than their urban peers.
Local schools often struggle with shortages of teaching materials, educational resources, and qualified English teachers. Because there is very little tourism, few international businesses, and almost no contact with foreigners in the region, students rarely have opportunities to practice English in real-life situations.
This is where Volunt2Thai makes a difference.
Working closely with local schools and communities, Volunt2Thai supports education, cultural exchange, and sustainable village development. International participants assist with English teaching at the V2T Campus and nearby village schools, helping children gain confidence while creating meaningful learning experiences for everyone involved.
A Playground for the Children of Ban Nong Kung
In 2025, the students and teachers of GeLeTe demonstrated what can be achieved when compassion and commitment come together.
Through creative fundraising activities during school events and project days, they raised an impressive 43,000 Thai Baht (approximately €1,100). Additional support came from BIOGENA, which contributed another 21,000 Baht to the project.
Together, these donations made it possible to build a new playground for the children of Ban Nong Kung Don Daeng Primary School.
For many people, a playground may seem like a simple addition to a school. For children in a rural village, however, it represents much more. It provides a safe space for physical activity, creativity, social interaction, and personal development. It is a place where friendships grow, teamwork develops, and childhood memories are created.
As Volunt2Thai founder Raimund Wagner describes it:
"An investment in joy, movement, and childhood."
Sustainability Meets Global Solidarity
The story did not end with the playground.
In 2026, GeLeTe's "Planet A" project course continued supporting the partner school through a sustainability-focused initiative.
The students wanted to combine environmental responsibility with international solidarity. Using rescued fruit that would otherwise have gone to waste, they produced homemade jam. One student also created reusable shopping bags from old T-shirts and leftover fabric.
The products were offered in exchange for donations during school events, including parent-teacher meetings and open house days.
The project generated additional funds for the Thai partner school, but perhaps more importantly, it demonstrated how young people can make a positive impact through creativity, sustainability, and community engagement.
Learning Beyond Borders
The partnership between GeLeTe and Ban Nong Kung Don Daeng Primary School shows that education extends far beyond classroom walls.
German students gain insight into life in a rural region of Thailand, while Thai children experience the encouragement and support of young people living thousands of kilometers away.
These meaningful connections are at the heart of Volunt2Thai's mission.
The project offers a wide variety of opportunities for volunteers and project participants. Whether their interests lie in teaching English, sports, music, yoga, physiotherapy for the elderly, gardening, environmental projects, cooking, baking, or cultural activities, there is a place for everyone to contribute.
Volunt2Thai welcomes university students, aspiring teachers, TEFL, TESOL, and CELTA certificate holders, retirees, veterans, families with teenagers and children, and anyone seeking a meaningful cultural exchange experience. Participants not only share their skills but also gain valuable insights into Thai culture, rural life, and global citizenship.
More Than a Playground
The new playground at Ban Nong Kung is far more than a construction project.
It is a symbol of friendship, education, and the belief that people from different cultures can work together to create meaningful change.
What began as a school partnership has grown into a living connection between young people in Germany and Thailand. Small fundraising activities became a place where children can play, learn, and thrive for years to come.
A playground connects worlds. And sometimes, a simple playground reminds us how much hope, community spirit, and opportunity can grow from a single idea.
